Blog Action Day 08 - POVERTY

Today is Blog Action Day The day when all bloggers post on the same topic: in 2008 we are blogging about poverty.

Most of us complain about the "recession", our mortgage, our superanuation decreasing...and while we are maybe facing some hard times, are we really facing poverty? The short answer is no.

There are plenty of kids out there born into poverty, and this year, to help out, I am joining in the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child - a drive which results in children of South East Asia and the South Pacific receiving a Christmas gift box put together by someone just like us. Have a read and see if you can get involved!

Back to the daily grind…

Holly and I will soon be making the daily trip in to the CBD to attend our respective organisations - me: work, her: child care.

So - posts may be a little sketchy over the next few weeks, till we develop some sort of routine....

We aim to post at least twice a week, so keep checking back! We're still around!

3 In The Bed

Holly has slept in our bed for the majority of her life. While some people told us we were 'creating a rod for our own backs', we actually enjoyed it. Now she is a strong 7-month-old though, it is a bit like sleeping with a kick boxer, and we have returned her to the cot. This seems to have occurred very naturally, as she transitioned easily and rarely comes into our bed these days.

This NY Times article discusses the taboo around co-sleeping.....(via swissmiss).

Weekend Reading

I am constantly inspired by the products, stores and blogs on the web. I bookmark the sites I really like, and whittle this down by checking in regularly. The sites only stay bookmarked if they are of clean design, have a 'positive temperament' and are regularly updated.

Here are my top 5 blogs:

  1. swissmiss - "swiss designer gone NYC". A visual archive for all things design, not just kids stuff. My all time favourite.

  2. Babygadget - a team of 3 Mums bringing "contemporary finds for modern tots". These ladies find the most amazing stuff (some of which is not available in Oz).

  3. Babyology - "daily finds on unique and fabulous baby products" written by a fellow Aussie Mum. Also includes a forum and product chooser. Keep an eye on this one - one of the new kids on the block!

  4. Celebrity Baby Scoop - "Get addicted. Celebrity Pregnancies, Babies and Families." I love spotting a familiar product being used by someone famous!

  5. Popsugar - "Insanely addictive". A neat and organised celebrity blog. Also links to fitsugar (fitness blog), casasugar (homewares etc) and yumsugar (cooking).

Beware - these sites are addictive! Happy reading.

Treehugging Babies

Finally, people are taking more interest in preserving the environment. We try to do our bit by walking where possible, using Green Power and using water mindfully.

There's so much more we can do though. This blog, Treehugger, has some great ideas for Greening Your Baby.

About

My name is Katie Mackenzie. I have a gorgeous baby girl, and a husband who shares my appreciation for design. We hope to bring Holly up in a place that is full of fun, style and function. We have no room for clutter. And we are limited to products that are available to Australians. This blog summarises our efforts.
